Paintings
Saul was a talented and enthusiastic painter. Painting influenced everything in Saul’s life and especially affected his photographic sensibilities. Saul painted to relax, painted while watching TV, painted on photographs, and painted on just about everything from his father’s ties to wine bottle containers from the corner store. He never tired of painting. He loved variation and painting was one artistic area where his sense of humor sometimes shined through. This is interesting since Saul’s personality was playful to the extreme but humor almost absent in his photography. Soames Bantry was Saul's partner for many years and a source of inspiration. I've included a few of Soames' paintings whose work Saul admired and encouraged.

Painted Photographs
One area where Saul's photography and painting merge is his painted photographs or "painted nudes" as he generally referred to many of them. There was a time when I was one of the few people that even knew about them. They have always been my most treasured works of his. He favored painting over the top of black and white silver prints allowing varying degrees of the image come through. The transformation is dramatic and speaks to Saul’s solid command of color in composition and abstraction. Saul often asked me to do pigment prints of painted photographs. He enjoyed scaling painted fragments and sometimes repainted the results. He was fond of variation and repeatedly manipulated familiar images.
